You've probably seen all of the free photo editing software packages out there. They're everywhere on the internet and in your email inbox. These freebies can look quite good but are they really free? Do they actually offer great value for money? And how can you tell which is the best?
To answer this, we first have to dispel some myths and stereotypes. For example, some free online photo editing software might be nothing more than a 'landing page', with a few basic editing functions where you can modify your picture by cropping, renaming, adjusting contrast and brightness. The best free photo editing software would come from an open-source developer, it may be a good 'one-off' program that does what you need, or it may be a fully featured, professional offering from a reputable camera manufacturer or software publisher. The best free photo editors will allow you to do all sorts of manual editing, from adjusting contrast, enhancing colors, merging photos, preparing slides or exporting images. The best free online photo editors will give you almost endless control over your pictures, but be able to save them in various formats like JPEG, PNG or TIFF.
That said, the best free photo editing program is a program from Adobe Systems Incorporated. It's called Photoshop, and it's the industry leader in digital art creation, editing and publishing. I use Photoshop every day and have for several years. When I decide to purchase a program, I try to choose one with the highest ratings and compliments from the professionals in the photography community. In this article, I'll identify the best program, and what I consider to be its greatest features.
Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, G+ and Twitter are among the most popular social media networks today. Almost everyone has created a profile on one of them at some time in their life, and most have a profile containing pictures. Since these social media networks are so popular, almost everyone has a collection of photos to share with friends and family. That's why it's so important to have a great free version of Photoshop that offers a variety of options for editing photos.
Photoshop has an extensive array of different options for editing your photos. I use it frequently to create custom covers for my photo books and love the advanced tools it allows me to customize. One of my favorites is the photo editing software package called Photoscape X. It's a paid upgrade from the paid version of Photoscape, but it is a complete stand-alone program. It allows you to manage your digital photo library and display all your photos in one location, easily searching and browsing through your photos. It also includes many powerful features for optimizing your image library and removing duplicate pictures.
The most complete photo editing software package on the market is the Fotor Photo Editor Pro. It's a free download, but you must buy the paid version to add extra features such as an 'undo' function and crop, resize and zoom functions. The photo editor in this version is very similar to the one found in Photoscape X and works with both digital and traditional formats.
Another fully customizable digital image editing software program is the Google photo editing software product called Picasa. It's a free download from the Picasa website and works on both Mac and PC. It is quite similar to the previous two photo editing software packages mentioned above and has similar tools for optimizing and removing duplicate pictures. Google images also allows you to edit and share your images with others and has a great feature allowing you to fully customize your graphics before you save them to your hard drive. It doesn't have quite the same variety of tools available as other programs, but is still a great option if you need photo-editing software.
One program that is growing in popularity is Adobe's own suite of photo editing products. The best free photo editing software for Macs is simply Adobe Photoshop, and it comes packaged with the majority of the popular image enhancement tools. If you need a little bit of extra customization or functionality, you should check out the Picasa software. Both these products allow you to fully customize your photos before you save them, and are well worth the investment if you are serious about taking good pictures.
